Viv's Space

Consoles and Handhelds

This page contains a full list of my collection. Most of these devices I got as defective or broken and repaired them myself. My favourite part of this hobby is to fix these devices and give them a new lease on life. The goal is to eventually have one of every Nintendo Handheld and Console. A simultaneous, but smaller goal is to have a full collection of Zelda Games. The Zelda collection is still ways off, but I'm getting there.

Donkey Kong Game & Watch

Photo of my Donkey Kong Game & Watch

Release Date: 1982-06-03
Manufacturer: Nintendo

I wanted to add this to my collection due to it being the first device featuring the now common D-Pad. Sadly it is not in a good condition. The top screen has a lot of bleeding and some of the plastic has broken off. But it still technically works and I played it a bit. As part of my collection it is mainly a display piece.

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

Photo of my NES

Release Date: 1983-07-15
Manufacturer: Nintendo
My Accessories:

  • NES Zapper
  • NES Four Score 4-Player Adapter

One of my wifes childhood consoles. It was stored in a box in the attic so I got it out, cleaned it, did some maintenance on the cartridge slot and added it to the collection. I already played a few of its games before on Emulators, but playing them on the original hardware is certainly a nice experience.

Favourite Games:
  • Tetris
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2

Atari 2600 Jr.

Photo of my Atari 2600 Jr.

Release Date: 1986
Manufacturer: Atari
My Accessories:

I stumbled upon a shockingly cheap offer for one and just had to get it. Since the 2600 is a vital part of gaming history I figured it would make a good addition to my collection. The controllers didnt work well, but I was able to fix them with a good clean.

Favourite Games:
  • space invaders

Game Boy DMG

Photo of my Game Boy DMG

Release Date: 1989-04-21
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • Backlight and Bivert
  • Aftermarket Case with Zelda Design

I have so many happy childhood memories with this device. The classic Game Boy was the very first device that allowed me to play Video Games. My parents got it used from a flea market as a gift to my brother and me. I vividly remember playing Pokémon Blue Edition on it, even taking it to bed and playing under the covers until I fell asleep. This is what got me hooked on Video Games and I still love going back to it today.

Favourite Games:
  • Pokémon Blue Edition
  • Mickey Mouse
  • The Amazing Spider-Man

Zelda Game & Watch

Photo of my Zelda Game & Watch

Release Date: 1989-08-26
Manufacturer: Nintendo

This device is truly a trophy piece for me. It's in a near perfect condition and I love having ssuch a vital part of Zelda history in my collection. The only thing that prevents it from being in perfect condition is the clip which has sadly broken off. I have not played it much, since I don't want to risk damaging it, but I have played it a bit and it is a lot of fun.

Game Gear

Release Date: 1990-10-06
Manufacturer: Sega
Modifications:

  • Capacitor Replacement

This one I bought broken with Capacitor issues. A chill evening of soldering later and it was working again. I have not played it much, mainly because the form factor isn't really comfortable for me.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)

Release Date: 1990-11-21
Manufacturer: Nintendo
My Accessories:

  • Tribal Tap 6-Player Adapter
  • Super NES Mouse

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Secret of Mana
  • Mario Paint

PlayStation (PSX)

Photo of my PSX

Release Date: 1994-12-03
Manufacturer: Sony
My Accessories:

  • PlayStation Mouse

My wife's old PS1 she had since childhood. I hardly use it since the PS2 can play all the games I want to play on it. This one I mainly use as a CD player, since the Interface looks so cool.

Favourite Games:
  • Final Fantasy 7
  • Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
  • Crash Bandicoot: Warped

My Accessories:

  • Memory Card 1MB
  • Memory Card 32MB
  • Controller Pak
  • Memory Expansion Pak
  • Transfer Pak
  • Rumble Pak
Modifications:
  • Period acurate sticker skin in Zelda design

This is my wife's old N64 she had since childhood. When I moved in with her I found it in a box in the attic and decided this is far too precious to just store away. I cleaned it up making sure not to damage the sticker skin it had and fixed the joysticks on all the controllers. Since then I played some of the games that were in the box as well and it definitely got me to appreciate the place it has in gaming history.

Favourite Games:
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • Super Mario 64
  • Pokémon Stadium

Game Boy Pocket

Photo of my Game Boy Pocket

Release Date: 1996-07-21
Manufacturer: Nintendo

A fun sized version of the DMG. I hardly played this one, but when I found a broken one for cheap I decided to buy it and fix it up to add it to my collection. The issue it had was a classic case of filth and corrosion. The screen is a little discolored in places, but not enough to warrant a replacement. All in all it makes a great addition to my collection, but I don't see myself playing it much.

Game Boy Color

Photo of my Game Boy Color

Release Date: 1998-10-21
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • Aftermarket Replica Case with Pokémon Design

Since my parents got me and my brother the original Game Boy there was expectedly a lot of fighting over who got to play it. So when my parents found this at a flea market they got us an Atomic Purple one to stop our fighting. We still both preferred the DMG. None of our games required the color screen and the contrast wheel made it much easier to play in low light conditions. Eventually we got Pokémon Crystal Edition for it and its easily one of my favourite games for the console. Wanderung up a mountain after I finished the game only to meet Red was such a great experience. When I finally beat him I felt like I really was the best Pokémon Trainer in the world. When i bougth this one the case was pretty beat up, so I decided to replace it with a aftermarket case.

Favourite Games:
  • Pokémon Crystal
  • Pokémon Pinball
  • Mission: Impossible (It's a damn TV Remote!)

Fire! Mini Classic

Photo of my Fire! Mini Classic

Release Date: 1998
Manufacturer: Nintendo

It's a fun, simple game, but not something I would play for long. I got it for quite cheap and its in a generally good condition. The only issue is that it's missing the stand, but I don't really care about that. I mainly got it to represent the Mini Classics line in my collection.

PlayStation 2

Photo of my PS2

Release Date: 2000-03-04
Manufacturer: Sony
Modifications:

  • Freemcboot Memory Card
  • Internal Harddrive

When I was a child my mum bought a slim PS2 so she could play SingStar games and allowed us to play our own games on it for around 1hr per week. When I got home from school and she was still at work I would play some of the games I had for it until she got home. After that I'd usually act like I was just in that room to get something so she wouldnt deduct it from my time limit. So to honor that part of my childhood I decided to get a PS2 for my collection. Since I didn't want to pay the absurd prices for my childhood games I decided to get a original PS2 so i could install a Harddrive and play my games from there.

Favourite Games:
  • Star Wars: Battlefront II
  • Lego Star Wars: The Video Game
  • Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

Game Boy Advance

Photo of my GBA

Release Date: 2001-03-21
Manufacturer: Nintendo
My Accessories:

  • GameCube Cable

I really love this console, but my childhood memories were mainly with the SP version. I got this one with heavily corroded battery contacts. Fixed it with a intense deep clean and new battery contacts. I have not played it much since the screen isn't backlit, but I do love the form factor.

GameCube

Photo of my GameCube

Release Date: 2001-09-14
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • SD2SP2
  • SD Memory Card

Easily my favourite TV console, simply because of the Gameboy Player. Sadly I had to sell my old GameCube, so I haven't gotten around to purchasing a Game Boy Player for this one yet.

Favourite Games:
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Phantasy Star Online
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Pokémon Mini

Photo of my currently disassembled Pokémon Mini

Release Date: 2001-12-16
Manufacturer: Nintendo

I purchased this one because I really loved the idea of a Pokémon themed handheld. Sadly it's currently in disrepair since the clear plastic got yellowed and brittle over time. There are no replacement cases available, so I am working on creating a 3D model to print a new case for it. I have not played it much, but the game I have for it was a lot of fun.

Favourite Games:
  • Pokémon Party mini

Game Boy Advance SP

Photo of my GBA SP

Release Date: 2003-02-14
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • IPS Screen
  • DS Battery
  • Aftermarket Case with Majoras Mask design
  • 3.5mm Headphone Jack
  • EZ-Flash Definitive Flash Card with aftermarket Pokémon Ruby case mod

When I was a child a good friend of mine had this and I was so jealous of him. He eventually got a PSP and I got to have his old GBA SP. It was the one with the cool tribal design and I loved it! Like all my consoles I eventually was forced to sell it by my parents to get a new one. This one had a very scrached up black case when I got it and I figured, might as well go all out on making the ultimate GBA SP.

Favourite Games:
  • Pokémon Fire Red Edition
  • Pokémon Ruby Edition
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

DS Lite

Photo of my DS Lite

Release Date: 2006-03-02
Manufacturer: Nintendo
My Accessories:

  • Pokéwalker

Back in the day my mum always drove a friend and me to school and he had a Phat DS. I was super jealous and really wanted one so I could play the Mega Man game he had as well. When the DS Lite came out I finally convinced my parents to get me one if I sold my GBA SP. I got a silver one and we got a R4 card for it from the flea market. My parents got me a bunch of ROMs for it and I was so hooked on it that they had to regularly confiscate it to get me to stop playing. Eventually I sold it so I could get a 3DS, but this is still easly one of my favourite consoles. When I got this one it had a defective battery, so I replaced it and added it to my collection. It has a small scratch on the top lid and the Touch Screen is a bit worn, but to me those are just battle scars.

Favourite Games:
  • Animal Crossing: Wild World
  • Pokémon Platinum Edition
  • Mega Man Battle Network 5: Double Team DS

Wii

  • Super Mario Galaxy

DSi

Photo of my DSi

Release Date: 2008-11-01
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • Custom Firmware

Never really wanted one of these as a child, especially since there were so few games that actually made use of it's features. This one I got used but working. The case is pretty beat up, but I have a replacement on the way. The CFW actually makes it a pretty decent device to have, but I definitely prefer the DSi XL.

DSi XL

Release Date: 2009-11-21
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • Custom Firmware

I traded a phat DS for this with a co-worker. Especially the large screen makes this my favourite way to play DS games nowadays. Currently it has a broken hinge, but I have a replacement case on the way.

3DS

Photo of my 3DS

Release Date: 2011-02-26
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • Custom Firmware
  • GBA SP D-Pad

This is still the 3DS I originally bought shortly after they dropped the price. The case had someof its paint worn off and there is a small crack in the lid, but I can't bring myself to give it a new case. I have a bunch of fond memories with this one and i still use it to this day.

Favourite Games:
  • Pokémon Omega Ruby Edition
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

PlayStation Vita

Photo of my PS Vita

Release Date: 2011-12-17
Manufacturer: Sony
My Accessories: Modifications:

  • Custom Firmware
  • SD2Vita

A former co-worker of mine bought this one on release, but never really used it so he sold it to me for a very good price. To this day i still take it with me everywhere I go and it's the device I finished Borderlands 2 on. I know the general opinion on this and especially the BL2 port is pretty negative, but I really loved playing it on the Vita. It's pretty lightweight, the screen is amazing and thanks to the power of emulation I can play all my favourite PSP and GBA games on it. This Handheld is like it was made for emulation.

Favourite Games:
  • Borderlands 2

Wii U

Photo of my Wii U

Release Date: 2012-11-18
Manufacturer: Nintendo
My Accessories: Modifications:

  • Custom Firmware
  • USB Harddrive

I mainly bought this one to get a more complete collection of Nintendo Consoles, so I haven't really played it much. If you have games you would recommend for it, please let me know! I'd love to hear!

2DS

Photo of my 2DS

Release Date: 2013-10-12
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • Custom Firmware

I never really like this one, mainly because the screen isn't really protected. (yes, the "2 Screens" are really just one screen with this one) This one was quite cheap though, so I got it to have a 2DS in my collection. The case is very damaged, but I havent really found any good replacement cases for it, so for now it just stays like this. Based on the damage I'd assume the previous owner has bit it a few times, I wonder if it's tasty.

Xbox One S

Photo of my Xbox One S

Release Date: 2016-08-02
Manufacturer: Microsoft

My wife got this to play Forza before we met. Nowadays it's mainly collecting dust. I haven't really played it, but I'm regularly using the controller to play games on my PC.

New 2DS XL

Photo of my New 2DS XL

Release Date: 2017-06-15
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • Replacement Motherboard
  • Custom Firmware
  • USB-C Mod
  • Thinkpad Trackpoint

I got this one as broken, with the description saying it doesn't turn on. After opening it up it quickly became clear that the motherboard was fried. Eventually I found a replacement motherboard for cheap on Aliexpress, so now it's back in working condition. Funnily enough the new motherboard was a United States one, so I guess I accidentally converted my EU version into a US one.

  • Ring-Con
  • Nintendo Entertainment System Controllers
Modifications:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • ARMS
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Nintendo Switch (OLED)

Release Date: 2021-10-10
Manufacturer: Nintendo
Modifications:

  • aftermarket version of Skyward Sword Joy-Con case
  • Reflashed Joy-Cons to match the official color codes for Skyward Sword Joy-Cons

I got the OLED version for the better screen and while it's a great device I can't say the purchase was worth it. I am waiting for something to arrive that will improve my experience with it, but if I say more Nintendo would probably send their hitmen after me.

Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda

Photo of my Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda

Release Date: 2021-11-12
Manufacturer: Nintendo

I got this as part of both the Zelda and the Nintendo collection. It's main use in my collection is as a themetically fitting clock. If i didn't have a PS vita this would probably be my edc emulator.

Thumby

Photo of my Thumby

Release Date: 2022
Manufacturer: TinyCircuits
My Accessories:

  • Link Cable

A "handheld" that is so small it fits on a keychain. I got it because i tought it looked cute. I've played a little TinyTris (Tetris clone) on it and while it's as fun as the next Tetris clone, the Thumby is just a cute hand cramp generator.

Favourite Games:
  • TinyTris

Steam Deck

Photo of my Steam Deck

Release Date: 2022-02-25
Manufacturer: Nintendo
My Accessories:

  • 3D-printed Keyboard Case
Modifications:
  • Swapped SSD for one with 1TB
  • Clear Shell
  • Clicky Buttons
  • Hall Effect Joysticks

I got a Steam Deck so I could play my PC games from anywhere. It's great to use on the couch, but it's size and especially the weight make it not as good for everyday carry.
